There are examples from the Prophetic Tradition and beyond that speak to the use of non-violence as a mechanism of advancing the vision of Islam: Peace and Justice.  The ummah was allowed to use non-violent tactics to fight for its rights - that's when Islam truly took off and flourished in the Arabian peninsula.
